Jamie Carragher has lauded the impact of Kai Havertz at Arsenal this season, drawing comparisons between the Gunners’ forward and former Liverpool star Roberto Firmino.

Havertz’s transition from Chelsea to Arsenal last summer has proven pivotal for Mikel Arteta’s side, with the 24-year-old emerging as a key figure, particularly in an attacking role. Initially deployed in midfield, Havertz struggled to assert himself, but his shift to a forward position has seen a remarkable upturn in his productivity.

Having scored seven goals and provided six assists in 16 appearances for Arsenal as a forward, compared to six goals and zero assists in 32 midfield outings, Havertz’s influence has been profound. Carragher, speaking on Monday Night Football, drew parallels between Havertz and Firmino, emphasizing their shared emphasis on off-the-ball work.

“When you think of great Premier League centre-forwards who aren’t prolific goal scorers, Firmino at Liverpool comes to mind, particularly due to his off-the-ball contributions,” Carragher remarked.

“Havertz displays similar traits off the ball. While he may not score prolifically, his work rate is invaluable to Arsenal’s system.” Carragher highlighted Havertz’s deployment as a forward ahead of Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah as a key factor in Arsenal’s resurgence.

“Arsenal’s defensive solidity has been remarkable in 2024, and Havertz’s role has been instrumental in this transformation,” Carragher noted.

“Initially questioned upon his arrival, Havertz has found his niche as a centre-forward. While he may not become a prolific scorer, his presence and contribution have bolstered Arsenal’s defensive resolve, providing them with a strong chance to clinch the Premier League title.”

With Arsenal currently topping the league table with two games remaining, Carragher acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by defending champions Manchester City, who trail by just one point with a game in hand.
