India Qualifies for SAFF Women’s Championship Semi-finals Despite 1-3 Loss to Bangladesh

The Indian women’s football team secured a spot in the semifinals of the SAFF Women’s Championship 2024, despite suffering a 1-3 defeat to Bangladesh in their final group-stage match at the Dasharath Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

Bangladesh dominated the first half, with Tohura Khatun scoring twice and Afeida Khandaker adding a third to put the match beyond India’s reach early on. India faced an additional setback when midfielder Anju Tamang had to leave the field due to injury in the 27th minute.

Despite the early goals, India continued to push forward, creating several chances to get back into the game. One of their best opportunities came in the 35th minute, when a cross from Ranjana Chanu found Ngangom Bala Devi in the box. However, Bangladesh’s goalkeeper, Rupna Chakma, made a crucial save to deny Bala Devi. Nine minutes later, Bala Devi, India’s top scorer in women’s football, found the back of the net, giving her side hope of a comeback.

In the second half, India pressed for more goals, with substitute Jyoti playing a key role in midfield. However, Rupna Chakma remained steadfast in goal, thwarting multiple Indian attempts. Jyoti came close to scoring again with assistance from debutant Rimpa Haldar, but Bangladesh’s defense held firm.

Bangladesh, now unbeaten in the group stage, will face the runner-up from the other group in the semifinals on October 27. Despite the loss, India’s earlier performances were enough to secure their place in the semifinals, where they will look to bounce back and challenge for the title.
