Graham Potter has been appointed as the new head coach of West Ham United, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with club. This marks his return to management after a 20-month hiatus following his sacking from Chelsea in April 2023. West Ham made the decision to part ways with Julen Lopetegui earlier this week after a six-month tenure.
“It’s a proud day to be head coach of this amazing club, with its rich tradition, history, and high expectations,” Potter said at his unveiling. “It’s a big challenge, but I’m really excited. It’s a bit like Christmas – Christmas for the adults.”
Potter’s arrival comes at a crucial time for the Hammers, who currently sit 14th in the Premier League, just seven points above the relegation zone. With only six league wins so far this season, Potter faces an immediate challenge to steer the team away from danger and return them to form.
“I’m looking forward to meeting the players today, meeting our supporters, and getting started,” Potter added. “It just felt right for me when I spoke to the club. It’s an amazing place with a loyal, passionate fanbase who know their football and know what they want. I think it’s a great fit.”

This marks Potter’s first managerial role since his time at Chelsea, where Todd Boehly appointed him after the takeover, but the club dismissed him following a difficult spell in charge. The Blues paid a £21 million compensation fee to Brighton, where Potter had previously achieved impressive results.
Reflecting on his Chelsea experience, Potter said, “I’m a better coach for the experience. Life is about accepting both successes and setbacks. I’m comfortable with who I am and what I’ve done. In professional sports, there’s always something to prove, and that drives you forward.”
Potter had also linked himself with the England managerial role before Thomas Tuchel took over from Gareth Southgate. Despite the lure of international management, Potter emphasized that club football is “more rewarding” for him.
His first challenge with West Ham will be their FA Cup third-round tie against Aston Villa on Friday, followed by a Premier League fixture against Fulham at home on Tuesday.
Potter’s appointment signals a new chapter for both him and West Ham, and the club’s supporters will be eager to see how he can turn their season around.
