PSG Set to Face Monaco in French Champions Trophy in Doha

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is poised to compete for its first trophy of the season against AS Monaco in the French Champions Trophy, set to be held in Doha, Qatar, on Sunday. This high-profile fixture not only kicks off the French football season but also underscores Qatar’s growing influence over the sport in France.

A Global Showcase

Traditionally, the French Champions Trophy serves as the curtain-raiser for the French football campaign and has often taken place abroad since its 2009 edition in Montreal. While other European nations, such as Spain and Italy, have expanded their Super Cups into four-team tournaments hosted in Saudi Arabia, France has taken a different approach, bringing the event to diverse international destinations.

This season, organizers originally scheduled the game for August 8 in Beijing to commemorate the 60th anniversary of France-China diplomatic relations. However, Chinese authorities canceled the event, just as they did the previous year when organizers planned to hold it in Thailand.

With the game in limbo, Qatar stepped in, securing the rights to host the event at Stadium 974, a venue prominently featured during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The decision was influenced by Qatar’s substantial offer, a welcome solution for the financially struggling French league (LFP), which has faced challenges, including reduced domestic television rights revenue.

Qatar’s Impact on French Football

The Qatari influence on French football has grown significantly since Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) acquired PSG in 2011. Under QSI’s leadership and its president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, PSG has become a dominant force in Ligue 1, claiming 10 titles in the last 12 seasons. Al-Khelaifi, who also chairs beIN Media Group, plays a pivotal role in the LFP’s boardroom and oversees one of Ligue 1’s domestic broadcasters.

Victory on Sunday would extend PSG’s dominance in the Champions Trophy, marking their 11th win in 12 years. PSG coach Luis Enrique embraced the Qatar setting, describing the match as akin to a “home game” during a press conference aboard the team’s Qatar Airways flight to Doha.

Monaco’s Opportunity

As Ligue 1 runners-up, Monaco earned the opportunity to challenge PSG, as the Parisian giants claimed both the league and French Cup titles last season. Despite PSG’s 4-2 victory over Monaco in their recent Ligue 1 encounter, Monaco aims to upset the favorites and secure their first Champions Trophy win.

Fan Engagement and Match Details

PSG has incentivized fans to make the journey, offering a package including a return flight, hotel stay, and match ticket for just €100. However, the club’s ultras declined the offer, citing reservations about the event’s location.

The French Champions Trophy match between PSG and AS Monaco will kick off at 10:00 PM IST on Sunday, January 5, providing fans worldwide with an early glimpse of the season’s top contenders.

PSG and Monaco prepare to clash, setting the stage for an exciting opener to the French football season, with the Qatari setting adding a unique backdrop to the event.
