Tragedy Strikes in Peru: Footballer Killed by Lightning Strike During Match, Five Others Injured

A tragic incident unfolded during a football match in Peru when Jose Hugo de la Cruz Meza, a 39-year-old player, was killed by a lightning strike, and five others sustained injuries. The horrifying event occurred as thunder rumbled around the stadium, prompting the referee to halt the game.

De la Cruz Meza collapsed face-first onto the ground moments after the referee suspended play due to worsening storm conditions. The hospital pronounced him dead shortly after the strike. The goalkeeper, Juan Chocca Llacta, 40, suffered serious burns from a direct lightning hit and a taxi rushed him to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

The other injured individuals included two teenagers, aged 16 and 19, as well as a 24-year-old known locally as Cristian Cesar Pituy Cahuana. Fortunately, all three remain in stable condition following the incident.

The tragedy took place during a regional tournament in Chilca, a district within the central Peruvian province of Huancayo, involving local teams Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca. The officials abandoned the match after 22 minutes, with Juventud Bellavista leading 2-0 at the time of the lightning strike.

Eyewitness footage showed players walking slowly towards the changing rooms as the storm intensified before the fatal moment. Following the incident, many have increased calls for improved safety protocols at sporting events, particularly in high-altitude areas like Huancayo, which sits at 10,659 feet above sea level.

Engineer Lucho Duarte emphasized the need for protective measures, stating, “This terrible incident reminds us of the importance of protection against lightning, especially in open-air events. We need to implement protective systems in sports installations and establish security protocols that include the immediate suspension of activities during storms.”

This incident echoes a similar tragedy earlier this year in Indonesia, where lightning struck and killed 35-year-old footballer Septain Raharja during a friendly match. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead shortly after his arrival.

As the football community mourns this loss, there is a growing awareness of the dangers posed by severe weather conditions during sporting events and the necessity of prioritizing player safety.
