Tottenham Hotspur have activated the one-year extension clause in Son Heung-min’s contract, ensuring the South Korean forward remains at the club until the summer of 2026. The move, while anticipated, safeguards Spurs against the risk of losing their captain on a free transfer at the end of the current season or via a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club in January.
This extension offers Tottenham Hotspur much-needed security, especially considering Son’s immense value both on and off the pitch. Appointed as club captain in 2023, Son has been a vital figure since his £22 million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015. With 431 appearances and 169 goals to his name, he is 11th on the club’s all-time appearance list and ranks among their top five scorers, behind legends like Harry Kane and Jimmy Greaves.
Son’s influence extends far beyond his on-field contributions. As arguably the most recognizable footballer in Asia, his global stature has significantly boosted Tottenham’s international profile, particularly in South Korea and across Asia.
