Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, has heaped praise on Martín Zubimendi, describing him as “the second-best footballer in the world after Rodri.” The 25-year-old midfielder stepped up in Spain’s recent match against Denmark, filling in for the injured Manchester City star Rodri. Zubimendi’s crucial late volley secured a 1-0 victory for Spain, further solidifying his growing reputation.
De la Fuente had previously called upon Zubimendi during the Euro 2024 final, where he replaced the injured Rodri and helped Spain clinch the title against England. Following this triumph, the summer transfer window was filled with speculation regarding the Real Sociedad star, as Liverpool reportedly made him their top target under new manager Arne Slot. Despite Liverpool’s interest, Zubimendi decided to remain with his boyhood club, a decision that surprised many.
Although Liverpool missed out on the midfielder, the club hasn’t shown signs of struggle early in the season. Under Slot, the Reds are currently leading the Premier League. However, De la Fuente remains convinced that Liverpool missed out on an elite player.
“Rodri is the best in the world, irreplaceable, but Martín is the second-best,” De la Fuente remarked. “He exudes confidence and composure, never faltering even under intense pressure.”
De la Fuente emphasized Zubimendi’s importance to the Spanish national team, praising not only his technical ability but also his growing offensive contributions. “Martín gives you everything you ask for. He doesn’t score often, but with us, he’s beginning to find the net, and we hope that continues. He’s a fantastic player. As I’ve already said, he is the second-best footballer in the world alongside Rodri.”

For his part, Zubimendi has no regrets about rejecting a move to Anfield. Reflecting on his summer decision, midfielder explained that he made his choice based on personal convictions rather than external pressure.
“My philosophy is to do what I feel is right at any given time,” Zubimendi said last month. “There was a lot of noise, and I went through some uncomfortable moments, but staying here felt like best decision. I’m happy and at peace with my choice. There’s always media noise, but in the end, it’s simpler than people think.”
Zubimendi doubled down on his stance, adding: “I don’t regret my decision at all. I made my choice from within, and it wasn’t based on a few early-season games. I see great potential in this Real Sociedad team, and every time I watch us train, I feel excited about what we can achieve this season.”
As the season progresses, both Liverpool and Real Sociedad are enjoying strong starts. However, Zubimendi’s decision to stay in La Liga may prove crucial for both club and country, with De la Fuente and Spain looking to continue building around their midfield maestro.
