Jadon Sancho’s time at Manchester United has been marred by underperformance and disciplinary issues. With his latest transgression—repeatedly arriving late to training—leaving his future at the club uncertain as Deadline Day looms.
Sancho joined Manchester United in 2021 from Borussia Dortmund for £73 million, but his tenure at Old Trafford has failed to live up to expectations. The 24-year-old winger’s ongoing struggles to cement his place in the first team have compounded due to a fallout with manager Erik ten Hag. Despite apparent reconciliation, the fallout still casts a shadow over his position at the club.
Initially, they hoped to set aside past issues, allowing Sancho to make a fresh start this season. He featured in the Community Shield but missed a penalty in the shootout, prompting United to leave him out of their opening Premier League squads. His teammates’ frustrations have reportedly grown, not just over his performances but also his poor punctuality.
Former United and Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic, who played alongside Sancho during the 2021 season. Revealed that tardiness was an issue during their time together. Speaking to Austrian outlet YuPlanet in 2023, Matic recounted how Sancho and other players frequently arrived late. Much to the annoyance of their punctual teammates.
“At Chelsea, players acted professionally and were always on time. At United, it was almost a daily occurrence for players to be late,” Matic shared. “Jadon Sancho, Paul Pogba, and others would consistently turn up late, which led us to form an internal disciplinary committee. We documented late arrivals, and one season, we accumulated around £75,000 in fines.”
As the transfer window nears its conclusion, Sancho’s future remains in limbo. Reports have linked both Chelsea and Juventus with the winger, though neither move seems straightforward. Chelsea’s interest includes a potential swap deal involving Raheem Sterling, but their crowded squad could limit Sancho’s playing time. Meanwhile, reports suggested Juventus had agreed to an initial loan deal, only for the Italian club to reportedly withdraw their interest, leaving one less option on the table.
Staying at United remains an option for Sancho, but with the likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo ahead of him in the pecking order, his chances of regular game time seem slim. United reportedly prefers a permanent transfer and has set a price tag of around £25 million—significantly lower than the nearly £100 million once quoted for the winger.
Sancho’s next move could be crucial in reigniting a career that has struggled to take off at Old Trafford. Whether he remains at United or seeks a fresh start elsewhere, coming days will be decisive for the England international.
