Roy Keane’s No-Nonsense Reaction to England’s Euro 2024 Goal Shows His True Colors

Roy Keane’s feelings toward the England football team were on full display during Euro 2024. Offering a moment that perfectly encapsulated the former Republic of Ireland star’s steadfast allegiance to his homeland.

As the Republic of Ireland prepares to face England at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday in their Nations League opener. There’s an added layer of intrigue surrounding the match. Former Ireland international Lee Carsley will be taking charge of his first-game as interim England manager, heightening interest in fixture.

ITV will broadcast the game, featuring Keane as a key pundit, and the outspoken former midfielder has never shied away from voicing his thoughts on the Three Lions. Throughout the summer, Keane engaged in extensive discussions about Gareth Southgate’s squad, often scrutinizing their strengths and weaknesses. Yet, despite his punditry role, Keane’s enthusiasm for the prospect of England winning their second major trophy was notably absent.

A particularly memorable moment occurred during England’s round of 16 clash against Slovakia at Euro 2024. As Jude Bellingham scored a crucial equalizer in the dying moments of the match, Keane’s fellow pundits, Ian Wright and Gary Neville, erupted in celebration. In stark contrast, Keane simply turned away from the screen, arms folded, visibly unimpressed by the turn of events.

The moment quickly went viral on social media, with fans relishing Keane’s unflinching reaction. One fan humorously remarked, “Roy Keane: ‘Why celebrate? It’s their job, isn’t it?’ Legend!” Another added, “I knew Roy Keane wouldn’t celebrate.” A third fan commented, “Look at Roy Keane, classic, and I love it.”

Keane, who earned 67 caps for Ireland during his illustrious playing career, is perhaps best remembered for his high-profile fallout with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and manager Mick McCarthy at the 2002 World Cup. Despite this, he later returned to the national setup as assistant coach to Martin O’Neill from 2013 to 2018.

The 53-year-old began his playing career with Irish side Cobh Ramblers before moving to Nottingham Forest and then enjoying a legendary 15-year spell in English football. With Manchester United, Keane won seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and the Champions League. Since retiring, he has become known for his no-nonsense approach to punditry, often offering blunt assessments of the England team.

During this summer’s Euros, Keane accused England fans of “arrogance” after the team advanced to the semi-finals. He questioned the high expectations surrounding the squad, stating, “You talk about England not having won anything for 30, 40 years, that’s not on this group of players. Focus on winning the game of football, and history will take care of itself.”

When fellow pundit Ian Wright suggested that the pressure on England stemmed from the talent within the squad. Keane responded, “We’ve been hearing that every tournament, for 30-50 years. To say you’ve had players to win every tournament over the last 30 years, I don’t agree with that.”

Keane’s unwavering loyalty to Ireland and his critical view of England’s football culture continue to make him one of the most compelling voices in the sport, and his reaction during Euro 2024 is just the latest example of his distinctive perspective.
