Andre Gray’s dramatic stoppage-time strike salvaged a 2-2 draw for Plymouth Argyle against Watford, preserving their unbeaten home record in a thrilling encounter at Home Park.
Gray hammered in a clinical finish from the edge of the box in the sixth and final minute of added time after substitute Mustapha Bundu set him up. The goal capped an exciting contest that saw both teams create multiple chances.
First-Half Action
Watford dominated early on, and their strong start was rewarded in the ninth minute when Vakoun Bayo slid in at the far post to convert Yasser Larouci’s pinpoint cross. Argyle goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw had little chance to stop the well-taken effort.

However, Plymouth responded in style. Gray leveled the score in the 23rd minute with a spectacular right-foot volley. Captain Lewis Gibson’s long ball from inside Argyle’s half dropped perfectly for Gray, who timed his run expertly and guided the ball past a diving Daniel Bachmann at the far post.
Watford regained the lead before halftime through Ryan Porteous. The defender made up for an earlier missed opportunity by steering Mattie Pollock’s cross into the net with a composed finish in the 37th minute. Porteous had a chance to extend the lead just minutes earlier but side-footed wide from close range following a corner.
Argyle playmaker Morgan Whittaker nearly put his side ahead before Watford’s second goal, unleashing a 25-yard half-volley that narrowly missed the target. Striker Michael Obafemi also came close, spinning to fire just wide from the edge of the box.
Second-Half Drama

Both teams continued to press after the break. Grimshaw made an outstanding save to deny Giorgio Chakvetadze’s curling effort, while Bachmann was alert to hold a low shot from Darko Gyabi. Argyle intensified their attack late in the match, with Gray coming close to an equaliser in the 71st minute, heading just wide from a cross by Sorinola.
Watford could have sealed the game in the 78th minute when Bayo was set up by Moussa Sissoko on a counterattack, but Grimshaw’s reflex save kept Argyle in the contest.
Gray’s persistence paid off deep into stoppage time. Bundu’s clever pass found the forward in space, and Gray’s thunderous strike gave Bachmann no chance, earning Plymouth a well-deserved point.
Manager Reactions
Plymouth Argyle manager Wayne Rooney expressed pride in his team’s resilience.
“We have that belief, especially when the fans get behind us. Even when we went a goal down, we did well to get back into it,” he said. “Andre’s goal was world-class—what a finish. He has been brilliant for us, and I’m sure there will be talks about him staying before January.”
Watford manager Tom Cleverley, although disappointed with the outcome, praised his team’s performance.
“If you reduce Plymouth to what we did tonight, you win nine times out of 10,” he said. “We were clinical in possession and had so many chances in transition. We just didn’t get the third goal we needed. Andre’s wonder strike has cost us—sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and accept that.”
What’s Next?
Plymouth will aim to build on their resilience in their next match, while Watford will look to sharpen their finishing to turn strong performances into victories.
