Manchester United’s Casemiro Dilemma: Struggling to Offload High-Cost Veteran

Manchester United are grappling with the prospect of retaining Casemiro for a third season due to difficulties in finding a buyer for the Brazilian midfielder.

Since his transfer from Real Madrid two years ago, Casemiro’s time at Old Trafford has been a mixed bag. Initially praised for his performances, his form significantly declined last season, drawing criticism and scrutiny over the hefty financial commitment United made for his services.

The decision to sign the then-30-year-old Casemiro on a five-year contract with a substantial salary raised eyebrows. Particularly given his age and the long-term financial implications. Now, at 32 and no longer a guaranteed starter, United find themselves with an expensive asset they are unable to offload. Reports from the Manchester Evening News indicate that expected interest from Saudi Arabian clubs has not materialized, leaving the Red Devils potentially stuck with the veteran midfielder.

This situation echoes past transfer missteps at United, where significant investments in high-profile players have not yielded the desired returns. Alexis Sanchez’s underwhelming stint at the club is a notable example of this pattern.

Gary Neville has been vocal in his criticism of such short-term signings. He remarked, “A manager’s job is purely to think about the immediate short term and getting results for himself. Casemiro is a perfect example of a short-term signing that is going to cost in the long term. That signing should have never gone through a good sporting director, a good owner, a good head of recruitment.”

Jamie Carragher also offered a blunt assessment of Casemiro’s current situation following a dismal performance in a defeat against Crystal Palace. “The level of that player, he should not be putting himself through this,” Carragher said. “He is too good to be putting in that level of performance and being laughed at by Crystal Palace. He is not playing Man City or Real Madrid. A man of that level should not be going through that. He needs to call it a day.”

United’s struggle to move on from Casemiro underscores a broader issue with their transfer strategy. Where substantial investments in aging players have often backfired, leaving the club with costly, underperforming assets.
