Manchester United’s ongoing transfer decisions could spark frustration from club legend Sir Alex Ferguson, especially if Alejandro Garnacho follows Scott McTominay out the door, marking a troubling pattern for the Red Devils.
Garnacho, who joined Manchester United’s youth ranks in 2020 from Atletico Madrid, has seen his role at Old Trafford diminish under manager Ruben Amorim. Despite making a strong impact in the first team last season, the 20-year-old winger has struggled for regular starting opportunities this campaign, with his notable omission from the matchday squad ahead of last month’s Manchester derby signaling his falling out of favor. Since then, Garnacho has not featured as a starter in a league match.
According to The Independent, Serie A giants Napoli are reportedly targeting the Argentina international as a potential replacement for winger Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, who is nearing a move to Paris Saint-Germain. A move this January would see Garnacho depart just months after McTominay’s own transfer to Napoli last summer.

Ferguson, a staunch advocate for promoting players from a club’s youth system, will likely feel displeased with these departures. The iconic manager has previously spoken highly of both Garnacho and McTominay, highlighting their importance to the club’s future.
Ferguson praised Garnacho and fellow academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo for their composure and bravery on the senior team, calling them the “heart and soul” of Manchester United. “What they’re showing at the moment, the composure and confidence to play in the first team, not be daunted by it… it shows the kind of courage they have,” he remarked.
Ferguson also voiced admiration for McTominay, noting his growing influence in the United squad, even naming him as one of the key players for big matches. The sale of both young players in consecutive transfer windows could certainly raise eyebrows, especially given Ferguson’s long-standing philosophy of nurturing talent from within.
With Garnacho potentially on his way out, the club’s approach to its youth system remains a point of contention, particularly among those who hold Ferguson’s values close to heart.
