Thiago Messi, the eldest son of football icon Lionel Messi, made his much-anticipated debut for the Argentina Youth team in the Newell’s Cup tournament. The young talent, who plays for Inter Miami, took to the field with his father’s legacy firmly in tow, donning the iconic number 10 shirt, just like his father.
The match, held in Rosario—a city closely associated with Lionel Messi’s early football years—saw Thiago’s team, Inter Miami, face off against Newell’s Old Boys. Despite a spirited performance, Inter Miami fell short, losing 1-0 in the under-13 competition.
The game, part of the prestigious youth tournament, was a proud moment for the Messi family, with several relatives in attendance. Messi’s wife, Antonella Roccuzzo, as well as his parents and other family members, were present to support Thiago in this important milestone. However, Lionel Messi was unable to attend due to commitments with his current football engagements.
Thiago Messi, who played alongside Benjamin Suarez—the son of another close friend of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez—was substituted in the second half. The pair’s participation together highlighted the strong connections between the next generation of footballing families.
While Thiago’s debut ended in defeat, his future in football looks bright, as he follows in the footsteps of his legendary father. The Messi family continues to support his development, with Thiago’s first steps in the football world hinting at the possibility of him continuing the Messi legacy on the global stage in the years to come.
