Arsenal Football Club has expressed its deep sorrow over the sudden passing of former player Fabian Caballero, who died at the age of 46. The club paid tribute to the talented striker, who made a brief but memorable impact during his time with the Gunners.
Caballero joined Arsenal on loan from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteño during the 1998/99 season. Although his stint with the club was short, he made his Premier League debut against Middlesbrough, coming on as a substitute for Freddie Ljungberg. Most of his time at Arsenal was spent with the reserves, where he played alongside notable talents like Nwankwo Kanu.
Following his loan, Caballero enjoyed a successful six-year tenure with Dundee, where he made 142 appearances and scored 26 goals, becoming a fan favorite. His notable performances included a crucial brace against Celtic, helping Dundee secure their first win against the Bhoys in 13 years.
Dundee Football Club also paid tribute to Caballero, expressing their shock and sadness over his passing. They released a statement saying, “Fabian signed for The Dee in July 2000 and became a fan favorite among the Dundee supporters. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Fabián’s family at this very sad time. The club will issue a full tribute to Fabián later today. Rest in peace, Fabián.”

Born in Argentina, Caballero began his career in Paraguay, playing for clubs such as Olimpia Asuncion, Tacuary, and Nacional Asuncion. He also had spells in South Korea with Daejeon Citizen, in Cyprus with Alki, in Chile with Provincial Osorno, in Greece with Panachaiki, and in Guatemala with Municipal.
In addition to his playing career, Caballero contributed to football as a coach, taking charge of youth teams at Sportivo Ameliano while also serving as a player-coach for the first team.
The Paraguayan Football Association acknowledged Caballero’s legacy, stating, “The Paraguayan Football Association deeply regrets the passing of former footballer, Fabián Caballero, who had an outstanding career both in Paraguayan football and abroad. We accompany the family and friends in this difficult time.”
Arsenal’s heartfelt message on X emphasized the club’s sadness over Caballero’s untimely death: “Everyone at the club is deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of our former player, Fabian Caballero. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”
