The Football Association (FA) has called for a harsher punishment for Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts following his reckless challenge on Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, which left the forward needing 25 stitches in his left ear.
π₯ Robertsβ High Challenge Sparks Controversy
π The incident occurred just eight minutes into Saturdayβs FA Cup fifth-round clash, when Roberts charged out of his area and made a high, studs-up challenge on Mateta. The referee immediately brandished a red card for serious foul play.
π’ Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish slammed the tackle as βthe most recklessβ he had ever witnessed.
βοΈ FA Pushes for Longer Suspension
β οΈ While a three-match ban is the standard punishment for serious foul play, the FA has used its discretionary powers to seek an extended suspension, arguing the standard penalty is βclearly insufficient.β
π£ FA Statement:
“The FA claims that, in the circumstances, the standard punishment for this offence is clearly insufficient. Liam Roberts has until Thursday, 6 March, to provide a response.”
The FA only intervenes in cases deemed “truly exceptional.” After debating the incident over the weekend, the request for a longer ban was submitted before Tuesdayβs 1pm deadline.
π An independent regulatory commission will now review the appeal and determine Robertsβ fate.
π€ Millwall Defends Roberts Amid Online Abuse

π¦ Millwall has strongly defended their goalkeeper, describing the challenge as βunfortunateβ while denying any malicious intent.
π΅βͺ Club Statement:
“Disgraceful suggestions that Roberts intended to hurt Mateta have contributed to an unwarranted character assassination of Liam and fuelled abhorrent online abuse towards him.”
ποΈ In a show of support, Millwall fans held a minuteβs applause for Roberts in Tuesdayβs Championship match vs. Bristol City, precisely at the moment he was sent off at Selhurst Park.
β What Happens Next?
π Roberts has until Thursday, 6 March, to respond to the FAβs request. The final decision will be made by an independent panel, determining whether his ban will be increased beyond the standard three games.
