David Beckham has expressed his confidence in Sir Jim Ratcliffe as the man capable of restoring Manchester United to its former glory. As a co-owner who joined the club earlier this year, Ratcliffe is on a mission to revitalize the team after years of underachievement since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
In recent discussions, Beckham acknowledged that while some of Ratcliffe’s decisions have sparked controversy—such as removing Ferguson from his £2.16 million-a-year ambassadorial position—he believes Ratcliffe’s intentions align with the club’s best interests. Beckham spoke candidly on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, stating, “I think that it definitely needed change. Many people said the club needed a fresh perspective on how it should be run and the decisions that are made.”
Beckham, a United legend and ardent fan, highlighted Ratcliffe’s commitment to the club, noting, “I really like Jim. I’ve met him a few times over the years with a few mutual friends. I think that he’s a fan and obviously he’s a great businessman, one of the best and one of the biggest.”
He emphasized that Ratcliffe’s genuine care for the club is crucial, especially as fans have grown disillusioned with previous leadership. “I think the fans had lost faith with the leadership over the years, but he really cares about what he wants to do and what he wants to create,” Beckham said.
While he remains optimistic about the future, Beckham cautioned that meaningful change will take time. “We’ve been quite patient as United fans over the years, but we want those good old days back. The sooner, the better.”
