Bernardo Silva has strongly criticized his Manchester City teammates following their late defeat to Manchester United, describing their performance as “like Under-15s.”
City had been leading 1-0 thanks to Josko Gvardiol’s header but suffered a dramatic turnaround when Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty in the 87th minute, followed by Amad’s last-gasp strike. The loss extended City’s poor run of form, with just one win in their last 11 matches across all competitions.
Silva, visibly frustrated, did not hold back in his post match comments, insisting that the team’s mistakes were to blame for the loss.
“We deserved what happened,” Silva told Sky Sports. “At this level, a game or two is unlucky, but when it’s 10 games, it’s not about luck. In the 87th minute of a derby, leading 1-0, and our corner ends in a penalty for them, that’s a stupid decision. When you make decisions like that with just a few minutes left, you deserve to pay for it.”
Silva emphasized the need for the team to reflect on their recent performances, adding: “Looking at the game, I think there was only one team that could win, but at the end, we lost. It’s not just one game – it’s been a lot of games lately. We need to do better, both individually and collectively. This isn’t the standard of Manchester City.”
Fellow midfielder Phil Foden shared his disappointment with the result, expressing frustration at the team’s inability to maintain control after taking the lead.
“Massively disappointed. We were 1-0 up and controlling the game, but it seems to be the story right now,” Foden said to BBC. “We had a lot of possession, but we switch off, and they score two goals. It keeps happening. We need to stick together, rebuild, and go again.”
Foden also addressed concerns over the team’s mentality, stating that while conceding the equalizer at 1-1 was understandable, conceding immediately afterward was unacceptable.
“When you lose a couple of games, it’s not a mentality problem, but when it happens often, it starts to feel like one. We need to get out of this rut and focus on getting back to winning ways.”
City’s poor run of form continues to raise questions about their consistency, and both Silva and Foden will be hoping for a swift turnaround in their next fixtures.
