Liverpool players are embracing Arne Slot’s approach despite a defeat in his debut match as manager, according to the new boss. The Dutchman took over this summer following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, stepping into a role with high expectations given Klopp’s success.
Slot’s tenure began with a 1-0 loss to Championship side Preston North End in pre-season friendly held behind closed doors. Veteran winger Robbie Brady scored the winning goal with a remarkable 40-yard lob. Despite the defeat, Slot remains positive, praising his players’ receptiveness to his methods.
Slot noted, “Yes, definitely. I’ve seen this a lot during the training sessions, maybe a bit more than today but that also had to do with the playing style of the opponent. We controlled the game completely and only conceded one shot. We were a bit unlucky to lose 1-0 given we only conceded the one shot.”
Slot highlighted Liverpool’s strong build-up play and chances in the first half, acknowledging the second half’s fewer opportunities due to young players playing out of position. “We couldn’t have asked more from the boys in the first two weeks. We’ve worked really hard, tried to implement ideas and it’s not that we’re only bringing new ideas, a lot of things that have already been done here have been really good.”

Liverpool fielded an experimental starting XI, with several players returning late from the Euros and Copa America. 25 squad members saw action, including Mohamed Salah, who captained the side for a half. First-team players like Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, Jarrel Quansah, and Harvey Elliott also featured.
Looking ahead, Liverpool will continue their pre-season preparations with matches against Real Betis in the USA. Followed by clashes with Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United. Slot’s side will conclude their pre-season against Sevilla before kicking off their league campaign against newly-promoted Ipswich.
