Archie Gray has revealed his admiration for Ange Postecoglou played a pivotal role in his decision to join Tottenham from Leeds United for £30 million, with Joe Rodon moving in the opposite direction for £10 million.
The 18-year-old, whose family are avid Celtic fans due to his footballing grandad’s Glasgow roots, expressed his excitement about working under Postecoglou, citing the manager’s successful stint at Celtic Park, where he secured five trophies in two seasons.
In his first interview on Tottenham’s official website, Gray emphasized the importance of continuing his football education under a seasoned manager like Postecoglou. “I’m a massive Celtic fan, so I love him, my whole family love him,” Gray said. “Playing under a really good manager is really important for me. I’ve still got loads to learn because I’m only 18, so that’s really important.”
Gray, who has signed a six-year deal with Spurs, expressed his excitement and readiness for the Premier League, despite having just one season of first-team experience with Leeds United, making 52 appearances. He highlighted the fitness and technical aspects of the Premier League as factors that suit his game.
“I think I’m ready for it,” Gray commented. “I think quite a lot of it suits me, but there’re obviously loads of things I need to start learning and I need to do that in pre-season.”
Regarding his playing position, Gray sees himself primarily as a midfielder but emphasized his versatility and willingness to adapt to different roles on the pitch to benefit the team across various competitions.
“I see myself as a midfielder, that’s my ideal position,” he explained. “But I’m a versatile player and I can play in a lot of positions on the pitch, which is really effective when you’ve got so many competitions and so many games.”
Gray expressed his eagerness to meet his new teammates and start the upcoming season with Tottenham, aiming to contribute positively in both domestic and European competitions, including the Champions League and Europa League.
