Flamengo’s star forward, Gabigol (Gabriel Barbosa Almeida), has been hit with a two-year suspension by a Brazilian sports court for alleged attempted anti-doping fraud. The 27-year-old striker vehemently denies the charges and intends to fight the ruling through an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Accused of Obstruction:

The Brazilian Doping Control Authority (BDCAD) announced the verdict, stating that the Anti-Doping Sports Court of Justice (TJD-AD) found Gabigol guilty of attempting to obstruct an anti-doping test. The alleged incident occurred on April 8, 2023, the day before a Flamengo match in the Rio de Janeiro state league. Reports suggest that Gabigol took the test after his teammates had already completed theirs, raising suspicion.
Maintaining Innocence:
Gabigol firmly maintains his innocence. In a statement following the verdict, he expressed his complete trust in CAS to clear his name. Flamengo, equally surprised by the decision, has pledged unwavering support for their star player throughout the CAS appeal process. The club strongly believes that no anti-doping violation, attempted or otherwise, took place.
Taking to Social Media:
Gabigol took to social media to express his disappointment with the ban and reiterate his clean record throughout his football career. Having debuted for Brazil in 2016, he has donned the national team jersey on 18 occasions, finding the net five times. Despite this setback, his focus remains on proving his innocence and getting back on the field as soon as possible.
With the CAS appeal on the horizon, the football world waits with bated breath to see if Gabigol can successfully challenge the doping charges and resume his promising career.
