Pundits on MUTV, Manchester United’s in-house television channel, have called for reinforcements in the January transfer window following the team’s latest setback—a 2-0 defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day. The loss marked the Red Devils’ fourth defeat in five games, leaving the club languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
MUTV, which typically offers a supportive perspective on the team, broke from tradition as former United players Danny Simpson and Sammy McIlroy voiced concerns about the squad’s current state. They emphasized the need for new signings to address persistent flaws, particularly in set-piece defense.
“I’d be surprised if Ruben Amorim isn’t saying that [he needs new players],” said Simpson, referencing the manager’s potential discussions with the club’s new owners, Ineos. “There’s got to be some conversation about needing his own players. Even if it’s players who haven’t had much game time, you need new faces to come in.”
McIlroy echoed Simpson’s sentiments, suggesting that even a small number of reinforcements could make a significant impact. “I totally agree. One or two signings, not four or five, could give the squad a lift,” he added.
Amorim Focused on Long-Term Vision

Despite the calls for fresh talent, United manager Ruben Amorim remains committed to his long-term vision for the club. Since taking the reins, the former Sporting Lisbon boss has prioritized instilling his footballing philosophy rather than immediately demanding substantial financial backing.
“I’m focused on understanding and improving my players,” Amorim explained. “That’s one of the problems of the club—we need to focus on what we have, including the academy, and define clear profiles for new signings. This is a massive club, and if you don’t win, the coach and players face the consequences.”
The Portuguese manager has also highlighted the importance of refining the club’s internal processes before heavily investing in the transfer market. “There’s a lot to improve at Manchester United, from the team to the club’s structure. It’s not just about buying or selling players; we need a clear strategy,” Amorim said.
January Window Looms
The upcoming transfer window represents Amorim’s first opportunity to strengthen his squad since taking over. Despite substantial summer spending, the team remains far from challenging the league’s top sides. Whether the club opts to dip into the market or stay patient with Amorim’s process remains to be seen.
For now, fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if Manchester United’s hierarchy heeds the advice of its former players and bolsters the squad in a bid to salvage the season.
