Ex-Arsenal forward Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been charged with attempting to smuggle cannabis worth £600,000 into the UK. The 33-year-old was arrested by the National Crime Agency (NCA) on Wednesday following a significant drug seizure at Stansted Airport.
On September 2, Border Force officials discovered 60 kilograms of cannabis concealed within two suitcases that had arrived from Bangkok, Thailand. Emmanuel-Thomas is set to appear at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court later today. Two women, aged 28 and 32, have also been arrested in connection with the case.
Emmanuel-Thomas, who currently plays for Greenock Morton in the Scottish Championship, began his career at Arsenal, joining club’s youth academy. He made his senior debut in January 2010 and went on to make five appearances for the Gunners. During his time at Arsenal, he was loaned out to Blackpool, Doncaster, and Cardiff before permanently transferring to Ipswich Town in 2011.

Throughout his career, Emmanuel-Thomas has played for several clubs, including Bristol City, QPR, Gillingham, Livingston, and Aberdeen. He also had stints abroad with the now-defunct Thai club PTT Rayong and Indian side Jamshedpur.
After being released by Kidderminster Harriers, Emmanuel-Thomas signed a six-month contract with Greenock Morton in July. So far this season, he has made six appearances and scored one goal.
This serious charge marks a significant turn in the career of the former footballer, and the ongoing legal proceedings will be closely monitored.
