Eddie Howe Discusses Newcastle’s Challenges with ‘Richest Club in the World’ Status

Eddie Howe acknowledges that Newcastle United has grappled with the expectations stemming from being labeled ‘the richest club in the world.’

The manager of the Magpies disclosed that this designation has posed challenges for his team since the club was acquired by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund in 2021. Despite finishing fourth last season and securing a Champions League berth for the first time in nearly two decades. Newcastle has struggled to replicate that success this campaign. Currently sitting in sixth place and facing an 11-point gap from fourth-placed Aston Villa with only three matches remaining.

In a conversation with Gary Neville on the latest episode of The Overlap, sponsored by Sky Bet. Howe shed light on some of the difficulties they’ve encountered. He stated, “Whenever you hear Newcastle mentioned externally in the media, it’s always the ‘richest club in the world’ tag that goes next to it. That’s been difficult for us, because there’s always been that pressure on us even though we’re not living that reality. We’ve had to battle that; the players have handled that really well.”

Despite the challenges, Howe, who has a managerial background at Bournemouth, a club that experienced growth through investment. Sees no issue with wealthy owners injecting funds into their clubs. He expressed, “I’ve come from a club like Bournemouth that had to invest to grow. So I think if the owner has the money and wants to invest in a safe way and put the money into the club, then why can’t he spend that money? I think that’s how football clubs should work.”

Howe

Reflecting on last season’s unexpected high finish, Howe admitted that it was a surprise for Newcastle. He remarked, “For us, fourth was never in our eyes last year. It was a case of could we build from the previous season: first not to have a relegation battle on our hands and then grow the team forward.” Despite the challenges faced this season, Howe remains ambitious and focused on continuous improvement.

As Newcastle prepares to host Brighton on Saturday and wrap up season with away fixtures against Manchester United and Brentford. Howe emphasized the team’s commitment to progress and consistency. He concluded, “At times we have and at times we haven’t this year, it’s been up and down.

December in particular was quite a difficult month for us this year but we’ve managed to weather that period. I think we’ve done okay – we have been consistent in our own way, and if we could maintain our position, then I think that’ll be a great season.”
