Clube de Salgaocar is set to make its debut in the top tier of Goan football as the expanded Goa Professional League 2024-25 season kicks off at Duler Stadium in Mapusa this Saturday.
Owned by industrialist Dattaraj Salgaocar, who previously co-owned FC Goa, the club earned its spot in the league through a direct entry via the corporate route. In their inaugural match, Clube de Salgaocar will face Geno FC, who secured a direct entry to the league last season.
Joining Clube de Salgaocar in the league is Goa Police, which has earned its place through promotion from the GFA First Division League.
Goa Football Association (GFA) President Caitano Fernandes expressed excitement about the league’s growth, which now features 14 competitive teams. “Clube de Salgaocar’s recent performances in the Bhausaheb Bandodkar Trophy qualifiers have been impressive, and we eagerly anticipate their contribution to the league,” Fernandes said.
Under the guidance of former international Keenan Almeida, Clube de Salgaocar has shown strong performances in the Bhausaheb Bandodkar Memorial Trophy qualifiers. The squad, which includes a mix of under-21 players and experienced veterans, is poised to bring a fresh and dynamic presence to the league.
In a statement released Friday, the club emphasized its commitment to developing young talent and fostering a new generation of footballers. “Our focus on skill development and teamwork aims to establish a strong foundation in the league,” the club stated.
Clube de Salgaocar’s initial five matches will be played at Duler Stadium, and the team is keen to garner local support as they embark on this new chapter.
Traditional powerhouses such as Sporting Clube de Goa, Dempo SC, Sesa FA, and Churchill Brothers will continue to be key contenders for the title.
“This season promises thrilling matchups and high-quality football. We encourage all football fans to join us in celebrating the sport and supporting their favorite teams,” said Fernandes, highlighting the crucial role of fan support in enhancing the league’s atmosphere.
