Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has suggested that he could seek opportunities away from Anfield this summer in pursuit of becoming a first-choice goalkeeper to advance his career.
Despite being Alisson Becker’s backup for the past four seasons, Kelleher enjoyed an extended run in the team this season when the Brazilian was sidelined due to injury. His performances played a crucial role in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup victory and earned him recognition after making 26 appearances.
Acknowledging the challenge of earning regular playing time at Liverpool with Alisson’s dominance, the 25-year-old hinted at the possibility of exploring other options to secure a starting role.
“While it would be great if that happened at Liverpool, I’m not naïve,” Kelleher told the Athletic. “I know that Ali has been the best goalkeeper in the world for years.”
Expressing his affection for Liverpool and gratitude for his time at the club, Kelleher emphasized his desire to progress as a No. 1 goalkeeper, whether at Liverpool or elsewhere.
“I’ve had such an amazing time at Liverpool. It’s been a crazy journey for me and one that I’ve absolutely loved,” he said. “Whether it’s here at Liverpool or somewhere else, I do feel the next step for me is to be a No. 1.”
Kelleher has attracted interest from clubs like Celtic, with Liverpool having rejected bids from teams like Nottingham Forest in the past. Expectations are for discussions about his future to take place in the coming weeks, following the recent managerial transition at Liverpool.
Reflecting on his increased playing time during the 2023/24 season, Kelleher expressed his satisfaction at proving his capabilities and demonstrating his readiness for Premier League football.
“It was my time to show the level I believe I can perform at and the level people at the club think I’m able to play at,” he said. “I’ve always had that belief in myself. Proving it to people was satisfying.”
With talks on the horizon, Kelleher remains open to exploring opportunities that align with his aspirations for regular first-team action, both within Liverpool and potentially elsewhere.
