Real Madrid’s search for a new centre-back in the January transfer window has hit a significant obstacle, as Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen has reportedly decided not to sell Jonathan Tah this winter.
The 27-year-old German defender had emerged as a key target for Los Blancos, especially given that his contract expires in the summer. Initially, it was thought that Leverkusen would prefer to sell him in January to avoid losing him for free, but according to AS, the club is now unwilling to let him go before the summer transfer window. This unexpected development presents a significant challenge for Real Madrid, who had earmarked Tah as one of their primary options to address their defensive needs.
Several other top clubs, including Premier League sides, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona, are also reportedly interested in Tah. However, all suitors will now have to wait until the summer for a potential move, complicating Real Madrid’s immediate plans.
With Tah no longer an option for January, Real Madrid will need to turn to alternative solutions for their defensive crisis. Manager Carlo Ancelotti may have to rely on academy players, including Raul Asencio, to partner Antonio Rudiger in central defence. Additionally, David Alaba, who has been sidelined due to injury, is expected to make his return by December, further easing the club’s defensive concerns.
