Beth Mead Joins Emma Hayes in ACL Concerns Ahead of FIFA Collaboration

Beth Mead, the England and Arsenal striker, is echoing Chelsea manager Emma Hayes’ apprehensions regarding the spike in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries around international breaks – a period when Beth Mead herself suffered her injury.

After this season, Hayes, who will manage the USWNT, urged FIFA and UEFA to scrutinize injury analysis research indicating that a significant number of ACL injuries occur within 10 days of transitioning from international breaks to club competitions, or vice versa.

Mead, embarking on a collaborative effort with FIFA to share insights on ACL injuries following her own recovery journey, under scores the importance of Hayes’ observations amidst what many term an ‘epidemic’ in women’s football.

Reflecting on Hayes’ remarks, Mead notes the significance of the 10-day period between transitioning from national team duties to club commitments, a timeframe coinciding with her own injury occurrence. She highlights the stress, mental strain, and scheduling complexities as influential factors contributing to ACL injuries.

Research indicates that female athletes are more prone to non contact ACL injuries compared to their male counterparts, with the congested fixture schedule in women’s football emerging as a contentious issue.

Mead, alongside teammate Vivianne Miedema, who also experienced an ACL injury, is set to collaborate with FIFA in addressing this pressing concern. They aim to contribute to ongoing research efforts to better understand and mitigate ACL injuries in the sport.

While acknowledging the challenges involved, Mead stresses the importance of substantial investment and collective efforts to find viable solutions. Despite the absence of a definitive answer, Mead emphasizes the collective responsibility among players and stake holders to drive progress and advocate for enhanced research initiatives in combating ACL injuries in women’s football.
