Arsenal Close In on Third Summer Signing with Mikel Merino Agreement

Arsenal are reportedly close to finalizing a deal with Real Sociedad for midfielder Mikel Merino.

Having already signed Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna and secured David Raya on a permanent transfer following a successful loan. Merino has emerged as Arsenal’s top target. According to Radio Marca Donostia via Sport Witness, the Gunners have agreed in principle to a £29.8 million transfer fee for the Euro 2024 winner, with the deal expected to be completed over the weekend.

Currently, Merino is still training with Sociedad but will not be included in their squad for their opening La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano. The Spanish international, who has one year remaining on his contract. Is reportedly moving for a fee below his release clause, indicating Arsenal’s successful negotiation strategy.

Merino had expressed his desire to leave, prompting Arsenal sporting director Edu to travel for discussions. After six years with Sociedad, where he won the Copa del Rey in 2020, Merino is set for a new challenge.

Sociedad’s sporting director, Roberto Olabe, had previously hoped to retain Merino, emphasizing the club’s preference for performance over financial gain. However, he acknowledged that they would respect Merino’s wishes if he decided to move on.

Olabe stated, “We would love for him to continue with us. It’s not a question of money; rather, it’s a matter of life, and that’s where everything counts. If that were the case, however, I told you that it would be impossible. Consequently, we may come to the conclusion that we prefer performance over money at the time.”

Arsenal will kick off their season against Wolves on Saturday, and if the transfer is finalized as expected, Merino could be available for their match against Aston Villa the following week.
