Antonio Conte Nears Napoli Managerial Role, Potentially Upsetting Gasperini’s Atalanta Dream

Reports from Italy indicate that former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte is on the verge of becoming Napoli’s next manager.

Conte’s potential move would come at the expense of Atalanta’s Gian Piero Gasperini, who recently likened the Serie A giants to a captivating woman. After Atalanta secured the Europa League title with a remarkable hat-trick from Ademola Lookman, Gasperini acknowledged the allure of Naples.

In a post-match interview with Sky Italia, Gasperini remarked, “We are celebrating tonight, I will talk to the President tomorrow. We’ll see. I am in an odd situation sort of like where I am married with children, but meet an absolutely beautiful woman. Maybe that’s not a good example for me to say on television.”

Sky Italia reports that negotiations between Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis and Conte have intensified. According to the outlet, “The president of Napoli has accelerated on Conte: the parties have reactivated contact, made progress, and there is a desire to close an agreement.”

Conte has been without a job since leaving Tottenham in March 2023 after a disappointing tenure. However, his esteemed reputation in Italy, highlighted by three Serie A titles at Juventus and one with Inter Milan, positions him as a desirable managerial candidate.

Despite Napoli’s lackluster performance this season, Gasperini’s Atalanta has secured a spot in the Champions League and currently sits fifth in the Serie A standings, buoyed by a late-season surge.
