Throughout his tenure at Arsenal, Mikel Arteta has wielded considerable influence, but this hasn’t always aligned with the decisions made by the club’s hierarchy.
In 2020, the Arsenal board identified four players – Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira, and Sokratis – as surplus to requirements and slated them for sale to generate funds for new signings. However, Arteta disagreed with this assessment, particularly regarding Maitland-Niles, whom he believed still had a future at the club.
For Guendouzi, a reported fallout with Arteta during ‘Project Restart’ marked the end of his Arsenal career. He was subsequently loaned out to Hertha Berlin before making a permanent move to Marseille in 2022. However, his loan stint at Marseille was short-lived as he moved to Lazio on loan this season.

Torreira, initially hailed as a vital addition to Arsenal’s midfield, saw his fortunes wane due to various factors, including homesickness. He joined Atletico Madrid in the same window but failed to impress sufficiently for a permanent deal. After a loan spell at Fiorentina, he made a permanent switch to Galatasaray.
Sokratis, after two and a half years with Arsenal, had his contract terminated by mutual consent to join Olympiacos. Following his stint in Greece, he signed with Real Betis on a one-year deal.
Eventually, even Maitland-Niles departed Arsenal, with Arteta reluctantly accepting the need for his departure. After loan spells with West Brom, Roma, and Southampton, he left Arsenal when his contract expired, eventually joining Lyon.
The departures of these four players illustrate the complexities of player-management dynamics and the challenges faced by managers like Arteta in balancing their vision with the club’s objectives.
