The San Diego Wave has responded to accusations from a former employee, Brittany Alvarado, with a statement calling her claims “inaccurate and defamatory.”
Alvarado, who served as a video and creative manager for the team, took to social media to urge the NWSL to remove the team’s president, Jill Ellis. Ellis, a former coach of the US women’s national team. Was accused of fostering a discriminatory work environment detrimental to employees’ mental health.
In a detailed post on X, Alvarado wrote, “Ellis’s actions have been life-altering. She prioritizes personal gain over employee well-being, fostering an environment that enables abusive behavior.”
Following Alvarado’s post, two other former Wave employees came forward with similar allegations.
In response, the Wave issued a statement acknowledging the social media post and asserting that it contained “inaccurate and defamatory statements about the club.” The team also mentioned they are exploring legal options to address the issue.
Alex Morgan, a Wave forward who won two World Cups with Ellis coaching the USWNT. Expressed her disappointment in a statement on social media. Morgan emphasized the importance of a positive and inclusive environment for both players and staff.
Morgan stated that as players, they have worked hard to build team surrounded by an inclusive, positive, and safe environment. “But it’s important to me that we are creating that environment for both players AND staff throughout the entire organization. Equity in the workplace is something I have and will continue to advocate for.”
Morgan added that while she is proud of the Wave’s accomplishments, there is still more work to be done.
The San Diego Wave, which debuted in the NWSL in 2022, topped the regular season standings in 2023 before OL Reign eliminated them in the playoffs. This season, they are ninth in the standings but boast the second-highest average home attendance in the league, drawing over 19,000 fans per game.
