While CSK encountered some resistance in the middle overs, Dhoni’s explosive cameo in the final over, smashing three sixes in just four balls, proved to be the match-winner. This late surge propelled CSK to a formidable total of 206 runs, setting a daunting target for MI.

Mumbai Indians began their chase brightly but were hampered by consistent wicket losses. While Rohit Sharma displayed individual brilliance with a valiant century (100 runs off 63 balls), it wasn’t enough to secure victory for MI.

In the post-match presentation, a jubilant Ruturaj Gaikwad, with a touch of humor, referred to MS Dhoni as the “young skipper” and credited him for the game-changing three sixes in the final over.
“Our young skipper scoring those 3 sixes helped us out a lot,” Gaikwad remarked. He emphasized the significance of adding an extra 10-15 runs on a batsman-friendly pitch like Wankhede, highlighting Dhoni’s crucial role in achieving that target. While Jasprit Bumrah and the MI bowlers posed challenges in the middle overs, Dhoni’s impactful finish ensured CSK crossed the coveted 200-run mark.
Effective Bowling & Adaptable Strategy Praised
Gaikwad further commended the CSK bowling unit for their exceptional execution on the Wankhede pitch, particularly applauding the contributions of Matheesha Pathirana, Tushar Deshpande, and Shardul Thakur.
Adaptability was another key theme for CSK. Gaikwad revealed that due to a niggle, Ajinkya Rahane was promoted to the opening slot, demonstrating the team’s flexibility and willingness to adjust for optimal results.
“We just need to keep it simple and encourage everyone to be in a good headspace. Jinx (Ajinkya Rahane) was carrying a bit of a niggle and we thought it could help him to open and I am fine to play anywhere,” Gaikwad concluded.
CSK will be aiming to build on this momentum as they progress through the IPL 2024 season.
