Kane Williamson’s determined 93 off 197 balls led New Zealand to a total of 319/8 on Day 1 of the series opener against England in Christchurch. Despite Williamson’s gritty innings, England fought back strongly, with Shoaib Bashir claiming 4 wickets for 69 runs.

New Zealand, after winning the toss and opting to bat, faced a challenging green-tinged pitch. England’s pacers, however, struggled to generate early movement, and it was Bashir’s spin that proved effective. Ben Stokes and Brydon Carse also made key contributions, with Carse removing Tom Latham and Gus Atkinson picking up Devon Conway early in the innings.

Williamson, making his return after missing the India tour due to injury, played with his usual composure despite taking time to settle. His first boundary came after 47 balls, but once he got going, he moved fluently, especially against the spin of Bashir. However, New Zealand’s inability to capitalize on strong starts saw them lose wickets at regular intervals. Daryl Mitchell, who had supported Williamson well, fell for 19 after a pull shot, and the loss of Williamson to Atkinson’s extra bounce was a significant blow.

In the final session, New Zealand’s lower order faltered, with Tom Blundell and debutant Nathan Smith falling cheaply. Glenn Phillips held firm with 41 not out, supported by a crucial eighth-wicket stand with Matt Henry, who contributed 17. As the day ended, New Zealand’s hopes remained intact, but England would be confident with the pitch expected to improve, making for an intriguing contest ahead.
