Wiaan Mulder will miss the remainder of the Sri Lanka Test series after fracturing his right middle finger during the first innings of the opening Test. The injury occurred when Mulder was batting, facing the fifth ball of the 27th over from Lahiru Kumara. The ball nipped back into him, and his fingers appeared to jam into the bat handle as he defended. Mulder received on-field treatment during the lengthy 10-minute over and continued batting, managing to face two more balls before retiring hurt.

Despite the injury, Wiaan Mulder returned to bat after South Africa lost their ninth wicket, scoring 9 not out, which included a six off Dhananjaya de Silva. At lunch, Wiaan Mulder underwent an x-ray, which confirmed the fracture, and Ryan Rickelton replaced him in the field.
Mulder’s absence disrupts South Africa’s strategy of deploying a four-seam attack with one specialist spinner. Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Gerald Coetzee remain as the pace options, while Keshav Maharaj is the only specialist spinner in the squad. Aiden Markram, however, is available to bowl off-spin if needed.
To fill Wiaan Mulde’s spot in the squad, Matthew Breetzke has been added as a replacement. This injury further strains South Africa’s plans, with Mulder’s all-round skills crucial to their balance in the ongoing series.
