Rassie van der Dussen is open to the idea that the 2025 Champions Trophy could be his last ICC tournament. At 36, he acknowledges that South Africa’s young talents are emerging, which could impact his place in the squad. However, he remains focused on his performances without any plans to retire soon.

“It’s definitely a possibility that it’s my last ICC tournament,” van der Dussen said ahead of South Africa’s final group-stage match against England. He praised young players like Tristan Stubbs, Tony de Zorzi, and Ryan Rickelton, who are pushing for top-order spots. Since 2019, van der Dussen has been South Africa’s most dependable No. 3, but his recent form has been inconsistent. Before his fifty against Afghanistan, he had gone ten innings without a half-century. If Heinrich Klaasen returns, his spot could be in danger.
Van der Dussen’s national contract expires in April, and discussions with team management will determine his future. He remains committed to South African cricket rather than prioritizing T20 leagues, stating, “My ultimate goal has always been to play for the Proteas.” While he has not retired from red-ball cricket, he does not see himself playing it anymore.
Despite uncertainties, van der Dussen is eager to contribute as South Africa builds towards the 2027 ODI World Cup. He is willing to take on a transitional role if needed. As South Africa faces England, who are already eliminated, they may not even need a win to advance, depending on the Afghanistan vs Australia result. However, van der Dussen insists they are fully motivated, saying, “We don’t need any extra motivation to play England.”
