On January 25, Tilak Varma made history by breaking Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs in T20Is without being dismissed. He also played a pivotal role in India’s thrilling two-wicket win over England in Chennai.

Tilak’s unbeaten 72 off 55 balls was not only match-winning but also record-breaking. His knock helped India chase down a target of 166, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. With this performance, Tilak surpassed the previous record of 271 runs held by New Zealand’s Mark Chapman.
His 72-run innings brought his T20I career total to 318 runs without losing his wicket, putting him ahead of India’s top players like Virat Kohli (258 runs), Sanju Samson (257), Rohit Sharma (253), and Shikhar Dhawan (252).
Tilak had already impressed in his earlier T20I innings with scores of 19*, 120*, and 107*. Against England, his knock included four boundaries and five sixes, displaying his dominance over both pace and spin. Despite pressure from England’s bowlers, including Jofra Archer, Tilak kept India on track. Archer gave away 60 runs in his four overs, with Tilak playing a key role in his downfall.
Though India faced some pressure, losing key players like Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav early, Tilak remained composed. He partnered with Washington Sundar for a crucial 38-run stand, guiding India closer to the target. With just six runs needed off the final over, Tilak sealed the win with a boundary off the second ball, ensuring a dramatic victory for India.
