After a nail-biting match against India in the T20 World Cup, Australia secured a nine-run victory, largely thanks to Annabel Sutherland’s impressive final over. Defending 14 runs, she took two wickets and helped deny India control of their destiny in the tournament. When Tahlia McGrath asked Sutherland how she felt during the tense moments, Sutherland replied, “I was chill as,” showcasing her calm demeanor under pressure.

The match unfolded in front of a packed Sharjah Stadium, filled with 14,946 predominantly Indian fans. Sutherland, who celebrated her 23rd birthday the day before, demonstrated her maturity and composure by taking 2 for 22 in her four overs, along with contributing a crucial 10 runs from the No. 8 position.
Praise from the Captain
McGrath, filling in as captain for the injured Alyssa Healy, praised Sutherland’s performance: “She executed her plan beautifully and has repeatedly delivered in big moments for us.”
Australia had faced challenges leading up to this match, notably the injury to Tayla Vlaeminck, who dislocated her bowling shoulder just four balls into a previous game against Pakistan. Healy’s status was also uncertain as she appeared on crutches after her foot injury. Despite these setbacks, McGrath emphasized the team’s unity: “In tournaments like this, it’s all about moving on and focusing on the task at hand.”
Dramatic Innings
During the game, Australia managed to post a score of 151 for 8. The innings had its own share of drama, including a near miss for Georgia Wareham, who failed to review an lbw call, and Sophie Molineux’s run-out due to confusion over a dropped catch.
Grace Harris top-scored for Australia with 40 runs off 41 balls, while McGrath contributed 32 runs. However, it was Megan Schutt’s outstanding 17th over, which conceded just one run and resulted in Richa Ghosh’s run-out, that turned the tide for Australia.
In front of a raucous crowd, McGrath noted the challenge of managing the game amid the noise, stating, “It was very loud… We’ve become accustomed to playing in such environments against India. It’s about staying focused and maintaining a level head.”
Securing a Semi-Final Spot
As the match drew to a close, with Harmanpreet Kaur threatening to sway the outcome with her 54 not out, Australia held their composure, ultimately sealing their place in the semi-finals.
