South Africa faced heartbreak in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against India, falling just seven runs short of their first T20 World Cup title.
It was South Africa’s first time reaching a World Cup final. The Aiden Markram-led team looked poised to win, needing only 27 runs off 28 balls with six wickets in hand. However, they succumbed to the pressure and couldn’t secure the victory.
David Miller was South Africa’s last hope, but his 21-run innings ended when Suryakumar Yadav took a stunning catch on the first ball of the last over. The Proteas needed 16 runs off 6 balls, and Miller almost hit the first ball for six, but SKY’s catch became one of the greatest in World Cup final history.
Reacting to the loss on Instagram, Miller said, “I am gutted!! Really tough pill to swallow after what transpired 2 days ago. Words don’t explain how I am feeling. One thing I do know is how proud I am of this unit. This journey was an incredible one, with highs and lows throughout the entire month. We have endured pain, but I know this team has the resilience and will keep raising the bar.”
Miller scored 169 runs in the tournament at an average of 28.16, with a half-century and a strike rate of 102.42.
