Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year, a two-match Australia A vs India A four-day series has been organized to provide players on the fringes of both teams an opportunity to showcase their talents.
Scheduled to take place at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay from October 31 to November 3, followed by matches at the MCG from November 7 to 10, these fixtures will serve as crucial lead-ins to the prestigious Test series.
Following the Australia A vs India A matches, the entire Indian squad, including the main tour party and the A team, will participate in an internal warm-up fixture at the WACA between November 15 and 17, leading up to the opening Test at Optus Stadium in Perth commencing on November 22.
Prior to heading to Australia, India will engage in a series of five home Tests against Bangladesh and New Zealand from late September to early November.
For Australia, the A matches will coincide with ODIs and T20Is against Pakistan, prompting selectors to evaluate potential players from the white-ball squads who could feature in the A side. These fixtures may also overlap with Sheffield Shield matches.
Given the proximity of the T20Is against Pakistan to the India series, it is unlikely that Australia’s Test players will participate in the former.
The batting order structure for Australia remains a topic of discussion, providing opportunities for players like Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris, and Matt Renshaw to stake their claims during the A matches.
Previously, ahead of the 2020-21 series, Pakistan faced the Prime Minister’s XI, effectively an Australia A team, in Canberra. India, during their last tour, engaged in two warm-up matches against Australia A, ultimately winning the series 2-1.
Additionally, the India women’s team will tour Australia for three ODIs in early December, coinciding with the second men’s Test in Adelaide.
