India ended their 11-year wait for an ICC trophy by beating South Africa by 7 runs in the T20 World Cup 2024 final in Barbados on Saturday. Virat Kohli’s crucial fifty helped India post a challenging total of 176/7, and Jasprit Bumrah’s magical spell in the death overs restricted the Proteas to 169/8.

Kohli’s Big Performance
Virat Kohli broke his poor form by scoring 76 runs off 59 balls, helping India set the highest total ever in the tournament finals. South Africa nearly clinched the win with Heinrich Klaasen’s rapid fifty, but late heroics from Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh secured India’s second T20 World Cup title.
Defending the Total

Hardik Pandya successfully defended 16 runs in the last over, taking crucial wickets of David Miller and Kagiso Rabada. Suryakumar Yadav made a stunning match-winning catch at long-off to dismiss David Miller in the final over.
India’s Innings
Rohit Sharma won the crucial toss and chose to bat first, with both teams making no changes to their playing elevens. Virat Kohli showed his intent with three fours off Marco Jansen in the first over. However, Keshav Maharaj quickly struck, removing Rohit and Rishabh Pant in the second over. Kagiso Rabada then dismissed Suryakumar Yadav in the fifth over.
Kohli’s Partnership with Axar
Despite the early setbacks, Kohli kept the scoreboard ticking with Axar Patel, adding a crucial 72 runs for the fourth wicket. Axar narrowly missed his maiden World Cup fifty, but Kohli finished with 76 runs off 59 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes. Shivam Dube contributed a quick 27 off 16 balls, pushing India to a formidable total.
South Africa’s Chase
Chasing a record total, South Africa lost opener Reeza Hendricks in the second over to a sensational yorker from Jasprit Bumrah. Arshdeep Singh then dismissed skipper Aiden Markram to keep India ahead. Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs added 58 runs for the third wicket, but Heinrich Klaasen’s fiery 52 off 27 balls brought the game to the last over.
Final Overs Drama
With 26 runs needed in the last 24 balls, Hardik Pandya dismissed Jansen in the 17th over, and Bumrah and Arshdeep took key wickets to put India in a strong position. Hardik bowled the final over with David Miller on strike. Miller aimed for a six, but Suryakumar took a sensational catch to end South Africa’s hopes. Hardik then conceded a four but finished with a match-winning over, leading India to victory.
Awards and Honors
Virat Kohli was named Player of the Match for his brilliant fifty, while Jasprit Bumrah received the prestigious Player of the Tournament award for taking 15 wickets in eight innings at an outstanding economy rate of 4.17.
