Sydney Thunder have reappointed Trevor Bayliss as their coach on a one-year deal, despite the team’s last-place finish last season. Bayliss, who guided England to the 2019 ODI World Cup victory, will stay with Thunder for a fourth consecutive season as they aim to return to the BBL finals. Under his leadership, Thunder reached the finals in 2021-22 and 2022-23 before a disappointing last season with only one win.

Bayliss expressed a sense of unfinished business, highlighting the progress made over the past few years and recent recruitment efforts as reasons for optimism. He stated, “With that and some of the recruitment we’ve done this year, we should be in a good position to win a number of games. Our ambition should be to win the tournament.”
The Thunder will play four games at Sydney Showground next summer, up from three last season, reducing their Canberra games to one by BBL 2024-25. Despite criticisms of the Showground wicket, Bayliss emphasized the importance of staying in western Sydney, citing strong local support and engagement.
Additionally, Thunder have secured Wes Agar from Adelaide Strikers in a trade deal. A key focus will be whether David Warner, whose contract expired at the end of the 2023-24 season, will return to the team.
