Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20I captain, is determined to return to Test cricket despite having played only one Test so far. Although he was not initially included in the young Mumbai squad for the pre-season Buchi Babu Invitational tournament 2024 in Tamil Nadu, Suryakumar has expressed his availability for the latter part of the first-class season. He plans to play under Sarfaraz Khan, requesting that the leadership remain unchanged. Suryakumar is expected to feature in Mumbai’s match against Jammu and Kashmir in Salem starting August 27.

Suryakumar aims to represent India in all three formats, stating, “Playing in Buchi Babu will give me good practice for the red-ball cricket tournaments this season,” as reported by the Times of India. He recently led India to a 3-0 T20I series win over Sri Lanka. However, he was not picked for the ODI series. Ajit Agarkar, the selection committee chairman, clarified that Suryakumar is not currently in their ODI plans.
With no T20I matches scheduled until October against Bangladesh, Suryakumar has a good opportunity to focus on red-ball cricket. After the Buchi Babu tournament, he will have the Duleep Trophy 2024 in Anantapur to showcase his skills. Suryakumar’s last first-class appearance was in the Duleep Trophy in July 2023. In 82 first-class matches, he has scored 5,628 runs at an average of 43.62, with 29 fifties and 14 centuries.
