Virat Kohli, a stalwart in Indian cricket, is currently facing a challenging phase with the bat in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Opening for the first time in this tournament, Kohli has struggled to find his rhythm, managing just five runs across three innings. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed confidence in Kohli’s ability to bounce back from this lean patch.
Sunil Gavaskar’s Confidence in Kohli

Reflecting on Kohli’s recent performances, Gavaskar emphasized that low scores do not necessarily indicate poor form, attributing them to the occasional delivery that could dismiss any batsman. Despite Kohli’s rare failures, Gavaskar remains steadfast in his support, urging patience and belief in Kohli’s eventual return to form.
“When you face three low scores, it doesn’t mean your technique or form is off. Sometimes, it’s just the nature of cricket where a good ball gets you out. I believe we should trust in Kohli’s abilities. He has shown remarkable resilience and has been a match-winner for India on numerous occasions,” Gavaskar remarked during an interview with Star Sports.
Gavaskar referenced Kohli’s standout performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, where he excelled as an opener for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, finishing as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 741 runs, including a century. Despite criticism earlier in the IPL for his strike rate, Gavaskar defended his stance, highlighting Kohli’s strategic contributions to his team’s success.
“The key for Kohli now is to maintain faith in his abilities. Additionally, he knows how to win matches for India, and I believe he will rediscover his form as the tournament progresses into the knockout stages,” Gavaskar concluded optimistically.
Kohli’s ability to handle pressure and his proven track record as a match-winner were underlined by Gavaskar, who remains confident that Kohli’s fortunes will turn around when it matters most for India in the T20 World Cup.
