Sri Lanka ushers in 2024 with a fresh captaincy lineup across formats, appointing Dhananjaya de Silva as the Test skipper. This decision follows Kusal Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga’s recent appointments as leaders for ODIs and T20Is.

At 32, de Silva becomes the 18th player to captain Sri Lanka in men’s Tests, leading in the one-off Test against Afghanistan. He succeeds Dimuth Karunaratne, who captained for 30 Tests from 2019 to 2023, concluding with a 12-12-6 win-loss-draw record.
Karunaratne’s captaincy commenced with a historic series win in South Africa, setting a positive tone despite subsequent results being less remarkable. He notably enhanced his batting performance, averaging nearly 50, surpassing his career average of 40.93.
De Silva, the new captain, has been a consistent squad member, amassing 3301 runs in 51 Tests at an average just under 40.
Chief selector Upul Tharanga expressed a preference for a single captain across formats but cited current player availability constraints for the diverse appointments.
