South Africa’s Fast-Bowling Woes Deepen with Coetzee’s Hamstring Injury

South Africa’s fast-bowling resources have taken another hit, with Gerald Coetzee sidelined due to a hamstring issue. Coetzee, expected to replace the injured Anrich Nortje in the Champions Trophy squad, missed out on a spot in the Joburg Super Kings’ (JSK) XI against Pretoria Capitals in the SA20. Although the team hasn’t provided an official explanation, they are closely monitoring his fitness, leaving his participation in the SA20 uncertain.

South Africa's Fast-Bowling Woes Deepen with Coetzee's Hamstring Injury

Coetzee recently returned to action after recovering from a groin injury sustained during the Test against Sri Lanka in Durban. He had also battled a hip niggle earlier in the year, followed by a 12-week conditioning program. Between July and October, Coetzee played limited cricket, featuring in just one MLC match and a domestic game for the Titans. He showed promise upon his return, impressing in South Africa’s T20I series against India and taking 4 for 85 in the first Test against Sri Lanka before injury struck again.

South Africa’s white-ball coach and selector, Rob Walter, confirmed that he initially considered Coetzee for the Champions Trophy but chose the more experienced Nortje instead. With Nortje now sidelined due to a back injury, Coetzee remains a key option, provided he regains fitness. If not, Walter may turn to alternatives like 18-year-old Kwena Maphaka, Corbin Bosch, or death-bowling specialist Ottneil Baartman.

South Africa’s pace depth has faced severe challenges, with eight seamers, including Coetzee, Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Wiaan Mulder, injured this summer. While most have returned, Nortje, Coetzee, Nandre Burger, and Lizaad Williams remain out, adding to the team’s mounting concerns.
