India’s seasoned pacer Mohammed Shami will miss Bengal’s opening match in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, a knee injury has derailed his plans, leaving his participation in future tournaments uncertain.

Shami Injured, Misses Vijay Hazare Trophy Opener Ahead of Champions Trophy

The Times of India reports that Shami will miss Bengal’s match against Delhi due to a swollen knee. This comes as a significant setback for the pacer, who has been striving for an international comeback following a lengthy injury layoff.

Shami played a vital role in India’s success at the 2023 World Cup, showcasing his exceptional fast-bowling skills. Unfortunately, his campaign was cut short by an ankle injury, leading to surgery. Since then, the Arjuna Award winner has not featured in any international matches. His recovery journey saw him perform commendably in domestic cricket, taking 16 wickets across the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Just as Shami appeared poised to return to international cricket, this latest knee injury raises fresh concerns about his fitness. Indian captain Rohit Sharma recently addressed the uncertainty surrounding Shami’s availability, urging the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to provide clear updates. Currently, Shami’s participation in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the upcoming Champions Trophy remains doubtful.

The NCA must confirm Shami’s full recovery to clear him for selection. For now, the team management and fans will have to wait to see if the pacer can overcome this setback and reclaim his spot on the international stage.
