Quetta Gladiators, the two-time Pakistan Super League (PSL) champions, have appointed Saud Shakeel as their captain for the 2025 season. The left-handed batter replaces Rilee Rossouw, who led the team in the 2024 edition. Shakeel will also take on the crucial role of opening the batting, a position where he excelled last season with an impressive strike rate of 141.67.
Gladiators Eye Third Title Under New Leadership
The Gladiators’ management has revamped its leadership structure, placing confidence in Shakeel and head coach Moin Khan to steer the team toward a third PSL trophy. As part of this overhaul, the franchise has ended Shane Watson’s contract a year early. Watson, initially expected to continue, was unable to participate in PSL Season 10 due to personal reasons.
In another significant move, the Gladiators are reportedly appointing former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed as their director of cricket. Currently mentoring in the Champions Cup, Sarfaraz brings valuable experience and insights to guide the franchise effectively.
Saud Shakeel’s Rising T20 Career
Shakeel’s performances in the PSL have established him as a reliable batter. In his debut season, he scored 323 runs in 10 matches at an average of 35.88, including two half-centuries and a top score of 88*. His T20 career stats are equally impressive, with 990 runs in 49 matches at a strike rate of 131.47.
Recently, Shakeel demonstrated his batting prowess on the West Indies tour, scoring a commanding 84. With this form and growing confidence, he is poised to lead the Gladiators effectively in PSL 2025, which is set to kick off in April.
