Ryan Patel’s career-best 134 helped Surrey reach 415, giving them a crucial 153-run first-innings lead over Durham at the Kia Oval. Patel’s commanding innings, which lasted just under five hours, played a pivotal role in taking the game away from Durham. Tom Lawes contributed a confident 58, joining Ryan Patel to forge a vital 92-run partnership for the eighth wicket. They attacked the second new ball and firmly shifted momentum in Surrey’s favor.

Surrey’s bowlers capitalized on their advantage immediately, as Dan Worrall dismissed nightwatchman Callum Parkinson with the first ball of Durham’s second innings, leaving them at 1 for 1 by stumps.
Durham, despite struggling in the field, bowled well early on, making Surrey work hard for runs. Durham dropped Ryan Patel twice, on 19 and 70, while Rory Burns and Tom Curran also survived chances. Burns, who scored 55, edged one on 43 but eventually lost his wicket to a superb delivery from Chemar Holder.
Dom Sibley (26) and Burns put on an excellent opening stand of 87, but Surrey suffered a mini-collapse, losing three wickets in five overs. Ben Foakes and Ryan Patel then steadied the innings with a 47-run stand, but Durham continued to strike back as de Leede, who took 4 for 106, dismissed Foakes and Sam Curran.
Patel struck three sixes and 14 fours in an innings full of powerful strokes. He built crucial partnerships with Tom Curran (22) and Lawes, whose attacking strokeplay pushed Surrey past Durham’s total. Lawes, a promising allrounder, struck a six and six fours in his second first-class fifty before being brilliantly caught by Alex Lees.
Durham’s bowling, led by de Leede and Holder, was commendable, but dropped catches cost them dearly as Surrey pulled ahead.
