Rutherford Pulls Out of CPL 2024 Due to Personal Reasons

Sherfane Rutherford’s withdrawal from CPL 2024 has deepened the struggles of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. During their last home game against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, a CPL statement announced Rutherford’s decision to pull out of the tournament for personal reasons. A replacement is expected to be named soon.

Impact of Rutherford’s Absence

Rutherford Pulls Out of CPL 2024 Due to Personal Reasons

Rutherford, 26, had featured in just four matches this season, scoring 35 runs at a strike rate of 194.44. His absence has forced Patriots to rely on Dominic Drakes, a bowling allrounder, to bat at No.7. The Patriots are currently at the bottom of the CPL 2024 points table with only one win in six matches. Despite Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga taking four wickets, Patriots couldn’t defend their total of 153 against the Falcons on a tricky pitch.

Captain’s Disappointment and Apology

Patriots captain Andre Fletcher expressed disappointment with the team’s recent performances, especially at home, where they have now lost 11 completed games since winning the CPL title in 2021. “I must say thanks, but we disappointed them [the St Kitts and Nevis crowd],” Fletcher said. He apologized to fans, stating the team will aim to win their remaining four games.

Injury Concerns and Squad Challenges

Further compounding their woes, allrounder Kyle Mayers is now a potential injury doubt after sustaining a hamstring issue, forcing him off the field during a two-over spell. Meanwhile, South African batter Rilee Rossouw returned to action after recovering from a calf injury.

Earlier in the season, the Patriots lost Zimbabwean allrounder Sikandar Raza to injury. They also faced challenges with the unavailability of Wanindu Hasaranga and Tabraiz Shamsi at different times.

Fakhar Zaman Leaves for Champions Cup

In another blow, Pakistan and Falcons opener Fakhar Zaman left the CPL to participate in the Champions One-Day Cup, Pakistan’s domestic 50-over competition. Fakhar, Falcons’ top scorer with 159 runs in five innings, was replaced by Brandon King, who marked his return from injury with a quick 29 off 16 balls to help the Falcons chase down 154 successfully.
