As the IPL 2025 auction approaches, cricket fans remain eager to learn more about the auction’s format and team strategies. A significant point of debate among franchises is the retention policy. While some teams prefer to retain more players to maintain their core from the previous season, others favor fewer retentions to allow for a fresh start.

According to a report by Boria Majumdar from RevSportz, the IPL 2025 auction will feature four player retentions and two Right to Match (RTM) cards per franchise. If confirmed, this could benefit teams like Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, which are keen to keep their core squads from the 2024 season intact.
On the other hand, franchises like Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Capitals had earlier requested fewer retentions during a meeting with the BCCI on July 31. In addition to retentions and RTMs, the Impact Player rule, introduced in IPL 2023, was also a major topic of discussion at the franchise meeting.
Rumors suggest that the BCCI might reintroduce a rule considering a player uncapped if they have retired from international cricket for five or more years. The BCCI will likely announce the final decisions on these auction rules in early September.
